I decided to look up the name Dutton on the web and see what it’s origins might be, and I found quite a bit of information. Cool stuff! I assume we’re related to this in some way. In short, the name Dutton goes way back to about the year 1000 and first appeared in Cheshire, England.
LOTS of information and trails to follow! So I just sort of threw this together as a general overview…
- The word “Dutton” is an English name for a place. It comes from locations in Cheshire and Lancashire which received their names from Old English Dudda (a given name) + tun = enclosure, settlement. It described the man who came from that locale. Another translation suggests it means “Town on a Hill” or “Two Hills”.
- There is a town called Dutton in Chesire, England.
Town of Dutton - A landmark of “Dutton Hall” (built in 1150) still stands. Dutton Hall in Cheshire England (pictures and lots of interesting history on this website. Good one.)

- There is also a Dutton Australia. Also a Dutton Bay on the southwest coast of Australia. I suspect these Dutton’s came over directly from England when Australia was a penal colony.
