I think I’ve figured out what to do with my first free Sunday in Germany (THIS Sunday, wow). At first I thought I’d cruise out of Cologne, but the areas I want to see are upstream which takes a bit longer. I don’t need to do a round-trip cruise, so I think I’ll take advantage of KD‘s rail discounts and ride a train down to either Bingen or Rüdesheim and ride the boat(s) to Koblenz, to hit the famous Middle Rhine (Mittelrhein) castle section of the river, including the Loreley valley 🙂 Four ships cover that portion of the route about every hour, so I can get on and off a few times and explore the local area a bit (like the Marksburg castle) before climbing aboard and moving downstream to the next disembarkation. Then take the train back to Cologne for dinner, and on into Düren for an overnight at the hotel before starting work on Monday.
Yup, that sounds good! (Here‘s a nifty video from KD’s website.)
