Ivy and I returned to the Houston Rodeo with my friends Raul and Arturo last Friday night. Holly was going to go also, but was really tired and needed a break. So she stayed home and chilled out. Instead, 3 vaqueros (cowboys) and a baby took the train to Reliant Stadium for the rodeo. This was Arturo’s first trip to a rodeo ever, so it was a nice treat for him. Ivy and I, of course, are well seasoned rodeo attendees, so we took him to see the exhibits and then later on to the rodeo in Reliant Stadium.
Immediately following the rodeo was Janet Jackson in concert. Woohoo! I was looking forward to seeing this show because I’ve always liked Janet Jackson. She’s the same age as me, but much hotter and richer and better dressed. The show turned out to be not quite as good as I had hoped. The sound in Reliant Stadium just never sounds quite right. The words are hard to understand and the music is slightly muffled. But it was still pretty entertaining. No wardrobe malfunctions.
The most interesting part of the show, actually, was Ivy’s reaction to it. She really liked the choreography and was doing lots of hand motions along with the dancers on stage. Then later, she surprised me by saying, “Necesito potty!” That was good to hear because I’ve been trying to get her to tell me BEFORE she goes potty instead of after. So I took her to the restroom and she promptly took care of business like a big girl. Bien hecho, Ivy! But suddenly I realized I didn’t have any more diapers. Oh great, now what? I actually walked around for awhile trying to spot a random Mom with toddler and was going to bum a diaper off of her (yes, my life has come to this), but I quickly realized that was a long shot. So I finally just said to Ivy, “Okay, do not pee-pee in your pants. Dígame si usted necesita ir al baño, OK?” She nodded and said OK, but I was getting mentally prepared for a mess sometime before we got home. We went back to the Concert and stayed to the end. Then made the long trek back to the Metro train and back downtown to the car. More than an hour later …. and no potty!! She made it all the way home without an accident! You rock, Ivy.
I guess that is a sign you are a parent when you are more excited about your child’s potty training success than Janet Jackson wiggling around on stage. 🙂
