Spring has DEFINITELY sprung here, and that means my green thumb is itching and twitching!
I recently added two new fruit trees to the back yard – an apple and pear tree. Oh, and not just ANY old apple or pear, these are 4-in-1 and 3-in-1 trees, respectively. Different types grafted together onto a common trunk. The apple is already producing fruit — little baby apples, as Ivy calls them, on the Dorsett Golden and Anna branches. I’m thrilled! The pear tree has only put out leaves so far. I’m assuming that blossoms will be later.
We are also replacing the fence that came with the house. The new one will have a rotboard that runs along the top and a cap/rail along the top (rather than having the dogears just sticking out there in the air). This should give the back yard a MUCH nicer “finish” around the edges.
I decided to take the plunge and try my hand at hostas. You don’t see many of those around town, but the ones you DO see are just so pretty. I ordered a collection of 6 and one more. One of them is an “Empress Wu“, which will be HUGE. Its leaves on the starter plant are bigger than the other. Another one — “June“, it’s called — is already unfurling and showing really pretty colors. I’ll be so thrilled if these work. They’ll stay in pots this first year and get moved around to spots to find out where their permanent home will be.
I’ll put better photos up once they are showing themselves.
So, here’s to a new green season!!
- Baby apples on the dorsett golden and anna branches.
- The hostas. Empress Wu in the big pot, Blue Mouse Ears in the little pot, June in the top right pot.
- Dazzleberry raspberry sedum
- June hosta showing early lovely color!
- Ivy and plant
- Two new coleus. The funky one on the right is called a “shrimp” type coleus.
